Tended — Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 19, 2026
This policy explains what Tended (the game for iPhone and iPad) and this website collect, why, and the choices you have. Tended is made by Alexander Whitney, an independent developer in British Columbia, Canada (“we”, “us”).
In short
- Your games stay on your phone. There’s no account and no sign-in.
- Anonymous play data helps make the game better. It’s tied to a random number made for your copy of the app, never to your name, and you can switch it off in Settings → Privacy.
- No ads, no tracking, nothing sold. We don’t collect your location, contacts, photos or payment details.
- Your email address is only collected if you write to us or join the printed-edition list.
- Questions or requests: tended@alexanderwhitney.com.
1. What we collect
In the app
Your games. Your seasons, Daily Garden puzzles, records, ribbons and settings are saved on your device only. We never receive them.
Anonymous play data. Unless you switch it off, Tended sends PostHog, our analytics service, information about how the game is played: which screens are opened, how games go (for example a season’s difficulty, its harvest and whether it was won), which settings are switched, crash reports, the app version, the kind of device and its system version, and the language, region and time zone set on the device. It is tied to a random number created for your installation of the app, not to you. It contains no name, email address, contacts or photos, and no precise or approximate location: PostHog is told not to look up your internet (IP) address, and the address is discarded when the data arrives.
Purchases. Tended is free to play, with one optional purchase, the Whole Garden. Apple handles the payment through the App Store; we never see your name, your Apple Account or your payment details. With play data on, the app notes that the offer was seen and whether it was bought, under the same random number.
Notifications. If you allow them, Tended’s reminders are scheduled on your device; nothing is sent to a server to deliver them.
When you contact us
If you email us, we receive your email address and whatever you choose to tell us, and use them only to reply and help.
The printed-edition list
If you join the list on this website to hear about a printed edition of Tended, we keep your email address with Kit, our mailing-list service. We use it only for that news, never for anything else.
This website
This website uses no cookies and no analytics. Vercel, which hosts it, and Cloudflare, which runs its domain, keep short-lived server logs (such as internet addresses and browser type) to keep the site running and secure.
What we don’t collect
No account or name, no contacts, photos or microphone, no location, no payment details, no advertising identifier, and nothing used to track you across other apps or websites.
2. How we use it, and why we’re allowed to
- To improve the game and fix crashes, using anonymous play data. If you’re in the EU, UK or Switzerland, we rely on our legitimate interest in making a better game, balanced by the data being anonymous and the off switch in Settings.
- To answer your emails. Legitimate interest, or to provide help you’ve asked for.
- To send printed-edition news to people who signed up. Consent, which you can withdraw at any time with the unsubscribe link in every email, or by writing to us.
- To keep the website and app secure and to meet legal obligations, such as tax records for purchases.
In Canada, we rely on your consent: express consent for the mailing list, and implied consent for anonymous play data, which you can withdraw with the off switch.
3. Who we share it with
We don’t sell your information, share it with advertisers, or use it for targeted advertising. We use these providers, who handle it on our behalf under their own data protection terms:
- Apple: App Store purchases, payments and downloads (Apple’s privacy policy).
- PostHog (United States): anonymous play data and crash reports.
- Kit (United States): the printed-edition mailing list.
- Vercel (United States): hosting this website.
- Cloudflare: this website’s domain, and forwarding email sent to our address.
We may also disclose information if the law requires it, or if Tended is ever sold or transferred, in which case this policy would continue to apply.
4. Information sent to other countries
Our providers store and process information in the United States and other countries, which may have different data protection laws from yours. Where the law requires it, we rely on safeguards in our providers’ data protection terms, such as the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses.
5. How long we keep it
- Play data is kept by PostHog for as long as it helps us improve the game. Deleting the app removes its random number, and switching off sharing stops any more being sent.
- Mailing-list addresses are kept until you unsubscribe or ask us to remove you.
- Emails to us are kept as long as needed to help you, and for our records.
- Website logs are kept briefly by Vercel and Cloudflare under their own policies.
6. Keeping it safe
We keep what we collect to a minimum and use reputable providers that protect data in transit and at rest. No system is perfectly secure, but there is little to protect: play data is anonymous and your games never leave your device.
7. Children
Tended is suitable for all ages. We don’t knowingly collect personal information from children: play data is anonymous, and the mailing list is meant for adults. If you believe a child has given us their email address, write to us and we’ll delete it.
8. Your rights
Depending on where you live (including the EU, UK, Switzerland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and many US states), you may have the right to ask what we hold about you, get a copy, correct it, delete it, object to or limit how it’s used, and withdraw consent. To make a request, email tended@alexanderwhitney.com. We’ll reply within 30 days and won’t treat you differently for asking.
Because play data isn’t linked to you, we can’t find a single player’s play data. You can switch sharing off in Settings → Privacy, or delete the app to remove its random number. For your email address (support or the mailing list), we can find, export or delete it on request.
If you’re unhappy with our answer, you can complain to your data protection authority: in the EU, your national authority; in the UK, the ICO; in Switzerland, the FDPIC; in Canada, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner or British Columbia’s OIPC; in Australia, the OAIC; in New Zealand, the Privacy Commissioner.
9. United States residents
US state privacy laws (such as California’s) ask us to list the categories of personal information we collected in the past 12 months:
| Category | Collected? | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Identifiers | Yes | The random number for your installation; your email address, if you write to us or join the list |
| Commercial information | Yes | Whether the Whole Garden was bought (through anonymous play data) |
| Internet or other electronic network activity | Yes | How the app is used (anonymous play data); short-lived website logs |
| Geolocation | No | |
| Protected characteristics (age, gender and so on) | No | |
| Biometric, audio or visual information | No | |
| Professional, employment or education information | No | |
| Inferences or profiles | No | |
| Sensitive personal information | No |
We have not sold or “shared” (for cross-context advertising) any personal information, and we don’t use it for profiling. You may have the rights in section 8 above, and you can use an authorized agent to make a request; we may ask you to confirm it’s really you. If we decline a request, you can appeal by emailing us, and if the appeal is denied, you can contact your state attorney general. We don’t give personal information to anyone for their own direct marketing (California’s “Shine the Light” law). Because we don’t track you, there is nothing for “Do Not Track” signals to switch off.
10. Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted here with its date. If a change is significant, we’ll also say so in the app or by email to the mailing list.
